Chalice Families — News From Children’s Religious Education, June 2008

A healthy social life is found only, when in the mirror of each soul the whole community finds its reflection, and when in the whole community the virtue of each one is living - Rudolph Steiner

Community is the theme for June. The children will be focusing on our third principle: we should accept one another and keep on learning together. Actually, each of our seven Unitarian Universalist principles can be applied when exploring what it means to live in community together. We are being offered the opportunity to further reflect on what we want for the children of our beloved community as we go through the discernment process as a congregation.

In the coming fall the Children’s Religious Education (CRE) Programme will embark on its own discernment process with the support of the Canadian Unitarian Council (CUC). Even though the CRE will be undergoing a separate discernment process, the children of this faith community are by no means separate from the congregation. Both the discernment process of the church that is ongoing this spring and the coming discernment process for the CRE in fall will give us the opportunity to create a vision for our youngest UUs that will fully include and welcome them. May the time our children spend with us in their community offer them “roots to hold them close and wings to set them free.”

Regretfully, we announce that Karen Trollope-Kumar has stepped down as Chair of the RE Council. Karen lead the RE Council with wisdom, kindness and a true love for religious education. The RE Council also says goodbye to Stephanie Ounpuu and Beth Gray. We are thankful for all of their contributions.

The Board of Directors appointed Ann Loree to chair the RE Council. Ann has a deep passion for children’s religious education and will serve our community well in her new role. Ann is currently looking for others who also share her passion for RE to join the RE Council. If you are interested in supporting our Children’s RE please contact Ann at: ann.loree@gmail.com

We will be starting June off with a visit from The Reptile Man. This is for all ages from ages 3 to our youth group. Parents with children under 3 are welcomed to stay with their children and enjoy The Reptile Man visit together but child care will also be available as well.

The Chalice Club kids (6–9 years) and The 7P Group will be learning about sportsmanship as they explore further sessions from the Spirit of Adventure.

The Spirit Play Group (3–5 years) will be hearing some new stories and doing some fun crafts. As always our Rainbow Room is open for children 3 and under.

Be sure watch out for our Summer Signup table. We will be scheduling volunteers for summer programming. This summer we will be offering The Unitarian Dr. Seuss program. Volunteering with our children during the summer is a relaxing and fun way to contribute to the CRE and learn more about our wonderful religion.

June 29th Summer Programming Begins for ages 3–13. Unfortunately we are not able to offer childcare for children under 3 during the summer.

Be sure to check your email for weekly updates from the CRE.
